Blues Dancing offers much more than simply the opportunity to dance (though that is pretty great). The atmosphere surrounding partner and blues dancing is such that you can also meet lots of new people, and make some new friends!
One of the big things that differentiates blues dancing venues from clubs and the like is how often people switch dance partners. Generally, everyone switches partners with each new song. Like I’ve said in previous entries, everyone dances with everyone. Because you can actually converse while blues dancing, when dancing with someone new, you might start to get to know them. And if you have a good chemistry, after a few weeks you may very well become friends! I’ve been fortunate enough to make a number of new friends through blues dancing. 🙂
The culture of blues dancing actually promotes getting to know other people there. At the Blues Union in Somerville, after big events, one of the members will often hold a party, and invite everyone who is present to come. Talk about friendly!
The other great thing about making friends through blues dancing is that you already know you have something in common: you both like to dance. So before even striking up a conversation with someone, you know you have a common interest you can talk about. Even one of my pretty shy friends that came to try blues dancing found himself having a nice chat with almost every person he danced with. And if he can do it, so can you; I promise!
Dancing With Friends!
Having friends where you blues dance is great. You always have someone to chat with between songs, and people to invite to other dance venues as you discover them. As you get more into blues dancing, chances are you’ll probably invite some of your outside friends to join you. You’ll want them to experience how much fun it is for themselves! I’ve brought a few friends in the past to try it, and they loved it. I’m hoping to bring some more friends to check it out tonight, actually. (I’m looking at you, D2D crowd! 🙂 )
Not only that, but blues dancing can be a great place to take a date. I actually know a number of couples who frequent the Blues Union in Somerville pretty much every week. So if you’re looking for a cool new place to take someone out to, a blues dance venue might be just what you’ve been looking for!
