Life is full of surprises. This is as true in blues dancing as it is anywhere else. You can always find new experiences that fascinate and surprise you. They certainly keep things interesting, that’s for sure. I had a couple of new, surprising experiences just in the past week.
One of these experiences took place at school. With the school year starting up again (and my last year of grad school!), Bentley University is once again offering its free partner dance classes, inclusive of salsa, meringue, swing, tango, and cha-cha. Naturally, I went to take the free classes, as I did last year. It was nice going already knowing a fair amount; it made me feel like an “expert”…sort of. But the surprising experience actually took place after class.
I swung by a Graduate Student Association dinner to say hi to some of my friends before heading out to blues dancing. The event was for both returning students like myself, and new graduate students. I met a few of these new students, and when I mentioned that I was going blues dancing that evening, they seemed very interested in what it was. Rather than explain it, I figured it easier just to show them, so I put my bag down, took the hand of one of the girls with whom I was talking, and showed them the basic blues step. They all seemed rather surprised that I would simply start dancing with someone without hesitation. And to my delight, they all asked about the free dance classes on campus; they wanted to check it out. So hopefully I will see them there this week.
The New Girls Don’t Always Ask Me to Dance…
That same evening, I went to the Blues Union for the usual Thursday night dance. There were a lot of new people there, presumably due to the start of the new school year. One of them was a girl who had just moved to Boston from California.
I danced with her a few times, but the surprise came as the last song came on. As the song started, she came up behind me and tackle/hugged me…and asked me to dance. I of course said yes, but I was a little taken aback. I’d never had anyone ask me to dance by first tackling me! 😛 We both thought it was funny, and had a good time dancing that last song. Now I’ve been dancing blues for over 6 months now, but it just goes to show you: you never know what each dance is going to bring!
