One of the cool things about the blues and swing dance community is the events that they put on. Generally, they come in the form of the weekly dances I’ve so often mentioned. However, sometimes the events are bigger than that. For instance, there are sometimes weekend-long conventions, festivals, etc. where people come from miles and miles away just dance and share their passion with people for a whole weekend. In fact, this coming weekend, July 26-28, Boston is hosting just such an event in the form of Sweet Molasses Blues!
This is actually the return of an event that Boston used to host every year, but has been absent in recent memory. So it’s a cause for excitement for a number of reasons. It’s a weekend full of open social dances, as well as lessons, workshops, and demonstrations by nationally renowned dance instructors. One of the benefits of this is the chance to learn A TON of new things about dancing, as well as new moves, and all that fun stuff! I’m personally very much looking forward to expanding my dance vocabulary. 😀
The other cool thing about these sorts of events is getting to meet people from lots of different areas who love dance. It’s a great way to make new friends, as well as networking for if and when you ever want to check out some dance stuff in other parts of the country.
This will be the first big weekend-long dance event that I’ve attended in its entirety. In the past I’ve checked out conventions and workshops about blues and swing dancing, such as the Boston Tea Party, but I usually only did one of the three possible days. So this will be a new experience for me, and it’s one I’m very much looking forward to! 🙂
